Reading books has become an interest of mine since I was a child. I love reading English books as well as Malay books; I do enjoy the beauty of the English words and also the Malay words. As disappointing as it is, there are, to my disgust, no Malay books that fit with my taste.
I am talking about books like The Lord of the Rings, To Kill a Mockingbird; are they any Malay books out there that are as great as these two books? (The Lord of the Rings, To Kill a Mockingbird, and others). Sadly, there are none.
Malaysians; as to what I know about them; are quite sensitive of things that concern about them; one of it is the usage of English and Malay language. They said, English is not necessary thus not important that it must not be used as the main medium for education for the reason of Malay language is the ultimate thing that every Malaysian must know and learn.
I do agree with those out there that say we must uphold our language; our country's official language which is Malay language. But that does not mean we must not learn and master English.
One can argue that even those countries who have only few of them that are able to speak in English are one of the most developed countries and also one of the 1st class nations in this world. They can say that because countries like Japan and South Korea, they have pursued and launched so many research and studies. Think about our country; as to what we can see now, we have been using Malay language as our main medium for education for countless of years; so any changes.. yet? Have we become a country like Singapore, Japan or South Korea?
Our country have steady supply of brilliant students but there is a problem about them; they can speak in English but not so fluently. We do, however, need students who posses an ability to speak in English very well, in such way that is perfect.
If we want Malay language to be well known all over the world, we must pursue studies, research as it would somehow, indirectly, brought an influence to the world like our country back then, successfully developed a vaccine for Influenza B that is now currently being used by the World Health's Organization which means, it is recognized worldwide but to my disappointment, the media does not really highlighted this thing and the public does not really know.
Ask yourself, how many achievements that our country have achieved other than Petronas Twin Tower or Mahathir's era achievements? You must have known some but do you know all of them? Nope.
I would also like to address the Ministry of Education's decision in lifting back their previous decision in making English as a compulsory subject for one to pass SPM. They said, time must be given to the students to prepare for this and improve their proficiency in English. But how do many more years do you want to take before you implement this?
That question lies with the government. They must answer it and do something about it. There are many NGOs that keep pushing the government about this but there is a lack of media highlights about this. Should the government does not want to do something about this, it would impact the economic development in this country.
